Session Guide
Planning a photo session can be a delightful experience if approached with a bit of organization and preparation. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you make the most out of your family photo session with SGP.
1. Choosing the Right Photographer
Portfolio: Look at the images on the website, do you like the style, the vibe? I like clean crisp images with minimal filters or effects. Most “editing” is done in camera at the session. I don’t want you looking washed out or like a zombie! Lots of colors and filters look dated and hide bad photos.
Reviews: Read client reviews and ask your friends! Also if you have any specific questions or concerns I am happy to answer them.
Availability: Check availability for your preferred dates. Do you have a special season you want for photos? Each season has its benefits. We can discuss which would be best for your vision of the images.
2. Preparing for the Session
Schedule: Book the session well in advance. I require a $100 retainer to reserve your session. I only take a certain number of clients each month vs. scheduling a specific day or time. With weather and family emergency’s (or illness), I have space in the schedule to work around these. Choose a time of year or day when your family is least likely to be rushed or stressed. What time of day are your kids happiest? The sun is best a few times of day but it is best to work with when the kids will be happiest. ie. Don’t make your teenager wake up early for sunrise, they will be cranky and puffy. Don’t skip nap time for the toddlers or keep them out past bedtime. The sun set’s after 9 pm in the summer and gives the most GLORIOUS light just before but will be useless if everyone is crying.
Location: It is not your job to come up with a location (I have plenty) but does a certain location have a special meaning for you? or a special look? Location may also be based on your preferred time of day.
Outfits: Plan outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Opt for coordinated colors and patterns. Avoid overly bright colors or busy patterns that might distract from faces or give a color cast. (No neon colors or graphics) If you have questions about what to wear just ask! I can always offer suggestions. Also keep pockets empty, we don’t want those weird lumps showing up in your gallery.Pro Tip: Have kids wear outfits previous to your session to see you they fit/react. Some nice clothes are just itchy and miserable to small children (and adults)
Props: If desired, select meaningful props (e.g., family heirlooms, favorite toys) but don’t overdo it. If you are bringing a comfort toy for a child it WILL end up in the pictures whether that is your intention or not.
Hair/Makeup: Plan for haircuts at least a week before the session, consider how your har will look outside in often humid contditions, it is Indiana after all! Do your makeup the way you like but please no heavy foundation or BB cream, I am a skin master and skin tone/blemishes are taken care of in post editing!
3. Day of the Session
Timing: Arrive a little early to get settled and make any last-minute adjustments.
Mood: Keep the mood light and fun. Encourage your family to relax, enjoy the process…..and listen to me! I am in charge of the children so you don’t have to look frazzled or do much instructing while trying to have your picture taken at the same time.
Snacks and Comfort: Bring snacks and water for everyone, especially if there are young children. (No messy snacks that get on clothes or stuck in teeth during your session) Bribing is an acceptable way to get those shots in quick!
Engage: Engage with each other naturally. Authentic interactions often result in the best photos. Keep it light and fun even if the kids are acting wild!
5. Post-Session
Preview: You will be shown a gallery to choose your final images from that will be polished up and edited to print standard. Let’s talk about what you like in the images and any changes or things you want corrected in the raw images!
Printing: Decide what sizes of prints and details of your album or framing when applicable.
6. Additional Tips
Stay Positive: Keep a positive attitude throughout the session to create a pleasant experience. Keep it light and fun even if the kids are acting wild!
Involvement: Include everyone in the planning process to ensure they feel invested in the photoshoot. Genuine smiles and interactions come across best in photos. I discourage practicing smiling with your child because some toddlers and kids will make their “fake smile” face the entire time.
Relax, we got this!
